During the autumn half-term, we invite you to creative tasks in the Lab. Bring an object to life, send a hidden message in an animation book, or make a bracelet for a friend!

Right now, the exhibition Alia Farid: Bneid Al Gar is the theme for the Lab:

  • What kind of stories can the objects around us tell us.
  • How can we use words to send messages, and what meaning do these words carry.

Inspired by the stories Alia Farid tells through the large sculptures in her series In Lieu of What Is, we will bring everyday objects to life by creating an animation book.

We will draw small pictures of something we might overlook in our daily lives, the food we rarely eat or use letters to send a message. Once the drawings are collected in a book, you can see how the objects come to life and how the messages appear as you flip through the animation book.

In addition to the book, we will make friendship bracelets using macramé. Just as Alia Farid explores traditional techniques in the rugs of her work Elsewhere, we will explore the conventional macramé technique in the Lab. Macramé is a method of tying a knot, and the name comes from Arabic, meaning "veil."

You don't need to know how to tie macramé beforehand. In the Lab, you can learn this technique from our facilitators.

Together, we will create friendship bracelets you can give to a friend or a friend you haven't met yet by exchanging a bracelet in the swap corner.

Please note: The Lab has currently been moved to the photography workshop by the cloakroom due to an exhibition change in the Main Hall.
